Im Rahmen der Vorlesung Eine (un-)trennbare Geschichte? wird das politische, sozio-ökonomische, ethnisch-sprachliche, kulturelle und zwischenmenschliche Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen den beiden Nachbarn Österreich und Slowenien vom Mittelalter bis heute beleuchtet.
In der als Ringvorlesung konzipierten Lehrveranstaltung werden slowenische und österreichische Kolleg*innen aus ihren neuesten Forschungen in Doppelvorträgen pro LV-Einheit vortragen, die sie im Rahmen des von beiden Akademien (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften/ÖAW und Slovenska Akademija Znanosti in Umetnosti/SAZU) initiierten gemeinsamen Geschichtsbuchprojektes erarbeitet haben. Am Ende des Ringvorlesungszyklus ist ein Runder Tisch mit den slowenischen und österreichischen Herausgebern geplant.
Die Teilnahme der slowenischen Beiträger*innen wird aus Mitteln des Wiener Österreich- und Ostmitteleuropa Zentrums finanziert

The next Botstiber Compact Seminar in Austrian Studies at UC Berkeley will be offered at the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester (5 weeks, starting January 21, 2025, ending February 25, 2025).
We invite seminar topics related to Austrian literature, history, or culture, in the broadest sense. Interdisciplinary approaches and themes are encouraged.

CfP: Genealogies of Memory 2024 - Gentry, Nobility, Aristocracy: The Post-feudal Perspectives
The vital and complex role of the landowning elites in the political, economic, and cultural history of Europe has been extensively researched, resulting in a wealth of literature. However, the question of how this role has been remembered since the dissolution of these elites as a social class, and what the implications of this memory and legacy are for contemporary European societies, has only recently been addressed by sociologists, historians, and anthropologists.
The opening hypothesis of the conference is that post-feudal social structures, which were a consequence of the power dynamics between the landowners and peasants, can be examined through a perspective of the longue durée. The existence of landowners as a class was brought to an end by political decisions and revolutionary movements, or gradually transitioned into social and political systems based on more democratic principles. This led to various legacies from the past, modes of remembrance, and finally, legal and economic circumstances. These diverse trajectories serve as a reminder of the East-West dichotomy in Europe, as in part of Central and Eastern Europe the end of the landowners' domination came with bloodshed and violence, as part of the making of the ‘Bloodlands’. However, our aim is to go beyond this dichotomy and see whether schemes other than East-West can be employed to understand the diversity of the gentry, nobility and aristocracy history in Europe.

Call for Papers: International Networks of Women’s Activism and Mobility in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Successor States 1848–1945
The workshop will take place on 11–12 November 2024 in the Collegium Hungaricum Wien
This call for papers aims to promote scholarly collaboration, resulting in a large-scale international research project on women’s activism in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the successor states between 1848 and 1945. The primary aim of the planned project is to reconstruct the history and the international network of contacts of Austrian-German, Hungarian, Slovakian, Czech and Moravian, Polish, Italian, Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Ruthenian, and Romanian women’s associations of different profiles as well as to study the activism of their leaders through a longer period of time and over different political regimes. The territory of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy would be considered as a transnational laboratory. Thus, within the frames of this workshop, we aim to provide a forum for conversation and to connect researchers to facilitate closer cooperation and further research in this field.
Call for Papers - Collegium Hungaricum Wien
We invite abstract submissions for 20-minutes presentations from scholars at all stages of their careers and from a range of disciplines, addressing any of the topics outlined above. Abstracts for presentations (300-500 words) and short bios (100-150 words) should be submitted in English by 30 April, 2024 to the following e-mail address: geschichte@chwien.at. Abstracts and presentations must be based on original research with the usage of primary and secondary sources.

Call for Papers: Centenary of the Locarno Treaties and Collective Security Policy in Europe

In October 1925, seven international treaties were concluded in Locarno and signed in London on 1 December 1925. Germany was admitted to the League of Nations in September 1926. The Locarno Conference was attended by Reich Chancellor Hans Luther and German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann, Austen Chamberlain for Great Britain, Aristide Briand for France, Émile Vandervelde for Belgium, and, briefly, Edvard Beneš for Czechoslovakia, Aleksander Skrzyński for Poland and Benito Mussolini for Italy. For European security policy since the Peace Treaty of Versailles, the de-militarisation of the Rhineland, the securing of Germany’s western borders and options for its eastern borders, and last but not least the Soviet Union’s perspective on Central Europe, the treaties laid important foundations for Europe within the framework of the League of Nations. They were based on the principle of peaceful conflict resolution and were designed to take account of different security needs. Arbitration and defence treaties contributed to this. However, the Locarno Treaties were not without controversy and led, for example, to the resignation of the German nationalist ministers in October 1925. In conjunction with the Treaties of Rapallo (April 1922) and Berlin (April 1926), they reflect German power and security policy, which defied clear Western or Eastern European categorisation. The potential for revisionist demands in the form of the return of German colonial territories, the shifting of the German eastern border and a possible unification of Austria with the German Reich was as much a part of the policy of understanding as was the conciliatory “spirit of Locarno,” but ended abruptly with the occupation of the Rhineland in 1936.
Under the central question of security in political, economic, social, and military terms, the conference will examine the international significance and impact of the Treaties of Locarno in their historical long-term perspective and discuss how and whether they can be understood today, almost one hundred years later, as part of the European dynamics of security policy. Contributions will focus on the treaty-based security system in Central Europe in the 1920s and the diplomatic negotiations from a transnational perspective.
Selected papers will be printed in a conference collective monograph, planned for issue in 2025/2026. The organizers will cover accommodation.
